What sort of gift should I buy for my gay friend?
The same as you would for anyone else. Just because he happens to be attracted to men, it doesn’t mean he likes different things – we’re all unique, regardless of which way we swing. Some people like things that are silly and playful, some people don’t.
Should it be something pink?
Probably not, unless you know that he specifically likes pink things. I think the best bet is to just buy him the same sort of thing you would if he was straight.
Does it need to be more expensive than usual?
No, probably not, but again this depends on what sort of person he is. If you really want a general rule then I’d say that you should spend the same as you would on anyone else.
Does it have to be something intimate and personal?
I think it’s true that most gay men are pretty open and playful about these sorts of things, but at the same time aren’t particularly interested in the intimate details; I mean most of us aren’t interested in hearing that about anyone!
The only exception to this might be if he’s in a new relationship with someone and they’re really excited about each other. It’s always fun to tease people in this situation isn’t it? That applies whoever it is, gay or straight!
What about something decorative for his house?
Well yes, maybe. Again this depends on what sort of thing he likes (yes I know I keep saying that), but generally speaking being gay means that you’re more likely to care about how your home looks.
Overall though I’d recommend not making any assumptions – just try to find out what sort of thing he likes – maybe ask one of his friends if you can.
