Overview

The best gift for your mum is to have a conversation with her and listen to what she says. The most important thing is to make her feel special, so the best gift is the one that makes her feel this way. You can do this by listening to her (as described above) and by observing her. You’ll learn what she likes and what would make her feel special.

Alternatively, you could just ask her, which is the easiest thing to do and you don’t have to think about it too much.

To do it in a way that is a bit more fun for you, you could ask her a series of questions to help narrow it down. Or you could just buy her a hat.

The most important thing is that you put some effort into it and get her something that she will like, even if it is something as simple as a hat.

How to find out what she would like

We all know it: the best way to find out what someone wants is to ask them, and this is the same when buying a gift for your mum. Hopefully, she’ll be able to tell you, or maybe you can help her decide by asking her a few questions. The most effective way to do this is to ask a series of questions each with two options. After a few questions, you’ll have narrowed it down to something she’d like and she’ll probably have had fun doing it.

The first question should be something that will immediately narrow the options down a lot, such as ‘is it something that you wear, eat, or do?’. This is good because it’ll immediately reduce the number of potential gifts by two thirds and you’ll both feel that you’ve made some progress. This is important because if you ask something that doesn’t narrow it down very much, you’ll both feel that it’s not going anywhere and will probably lose interest.

The next one could be something like ‘is it something that you do with other people or on your own?’. Or if she chose something that you wear, you could ask whether it is for her head, or her body. If she says it is for her head, it’s most likely that she wants a hat, but you could confirm this by asking if it is something you wear, or eat. Hopefully, she’ll say that you wear it and you’ll have a straightforward answer. If she says she eats it, you could ask what kind of hat you should get her, which she’ll probably think is funny. Or maybe she does like eating hats, but I doubt it.

How to make her feel special

The most important part of buying a gift for my mum is to make her feel special. This can be done by getting her something that she likes, and by showing her that you have gone to some effort to do it. The process of asking her questions as described above is a good way to do this, although it would probably work even better if you can observe her and work out what she would like. If you manage to do this, she’ll feel special and loved, and probably proud of you for being so observant and thoughtful.
