Overview

Summary: If you want to buy a rude card for a man, you should either get something that is genuinely offensive, or something that is funny, but the recipient pretends to be offended. Also if you want to buy a card for a man you need to think about whether he’d appreciate something that looks cool or cute; in my experience most men prefer something that looks cool. This is probably because it’s harder for us to pull off cuteness than the average woman.

What sort of card should I get?

The most obvious question here is how offensive you want the card to be. The answer might seem obvious but in my experience it isn’t. For example, if you want to get a really offensive card for your partner, do you really want him to take offence and be upset? Presumably not! It’s more likely that you want something funny but cheeky, and he knows you’re joking.

Or maybe not. Maybe he has genuinely upset you and you are considering buying him a card to show him. In this case it’s probably best not to do it; just be direct with him.

Or maybe your situation is even more complicated than that – maybe I’m over simplifying things.

If in doubt I suggest just talking to someone about it (and yes, I’m happy to help – just drop me an email).

What style of card should I get?

I think most people would agree that there are two main classes of things: cute and cool, and this applies to cards too.

In my experience most women like things that are cute and wouldn’t seriously consider buying something cool. I know this sounds weird but it’s generally true.

For men it’s different; we can’t really get away with being cute – when we try we just look stupid. As such we tend not to go for things like this.

The result of this is that when choosing a card for a man, most people think they should choose something cute because that’s what they would like themselves, but actually they should go for something cool because that’s what most men prefer.
