Why is it so hard to find something suitable for a lesbian?
This is a good question, and I don’t know the answer. There are plenty of places that sell stereotypical rainbow themed gifts but nothing really specific. Maybe it’s because we tend not to take ourselves too seriously, or maybe it’s because we don’t feel the need to be ‘proud’ all the time – it’s just what we are.
I think it’s also that there aren’t many shops that offer things that are genuinely funny – you can get a mug or t-shirt with some silly joke on it but they’re never really funny, just silly. Most places just sell mass-produced stuff that they buy from a wholesaler, so they don’t have much control over what they sell, so just go for what’s popular. I think the main reason is that there aren’t many shops like this one: it’s just me here at Mr Inappropriate and I design everything myself, so I can be as creative as I want.
How do you choose something suitable?
I guess this depends on what she likes, but if she is anything like me then she’ll want something fun and useful; something she can use every day without feeling like she’s making some sort of statement. I know that many people love the rainbow thing but if you ask me it has been overused a little bit – you see rainbows everywhere now because they’re used for other things.
Also, I think when you get used to being different you tend to be self-sufficient and develop your own sense of style, so maybe we’re less likely to buy stuff like this. We’re also used to being independent so maybe we’re less likely to buy each other gifts.
