The best birthday card for your friend is one that matches his sense of humour, so you need to think about the sort of things he finds funny and buy something suitable. If you know him well it should be easy for you to choose, but if you’re not sure you could always ask one of his other friends.
Something else to consider is the way your friend will feel when he receives the card with everyone watching. He might love a card that’s about him being lazy (for example) but might be embarrassed to admit it in front of people.
It’s also worth considering whether you want to get a card that is playful and fun, or something a bit mean that is more likely to make him feel bad.

What sort of humour does he like?
As I mentioned earlier, I think the most important thing to consider is what sort of humour your mate likes. Some people like something really silly and childish, some like a really clever joke and others prefer straight-up abuse and mockery.
If you know them well it should be pretty easy to answer this question and therefore easy to choose a card. If you don’t know them well enough it might be worth asking another friend who knows him better; if they’re the sort of person who would enjoy a mean birthday card they’ll probably have received one in the past from someone else.
Of course, if they can’t decide either there is another option; just go for something generic. We have lots of cards that are suitable for anyone, so whatever sort of personality your mate has, there’ll be something at Mr Inappropriate that will suit them.
Thinking about it though, if you do go for something generic it does rather defeat the point of this article!
How will he feel when he receives it?
I think some people are more or less sensitive depending on who they’re with; I’m certainly like that! When I’m at work with my colleagues I am pretty sensible and quite sensitive compared to when I’m with my mates.
Some people are always the same though no matter who they’re with so perhaps have a think about this before choosing a card; as always if you don’t know them well enough maybe ask someone else before making your decision.
Would you prefer a happy jovial message or something mean?
This depends on what sort of feeling you want them to get when they receive their card. Most people reading this want their mate to feel good about themselves (and possibly laugh) but I imagine some people would prefer their mate just feels bad!
If that’s what you want there are certainly plenty of options for cards that make them feel bad about themselves!
