Overview
If you want to buy a BDSM toy, the easiest and safest way is to buy one from a specialist shop like Mr. Inappropriate, but if you want the experience of making something yourself there are a few options. The most important thing to consider is safety; it’s easy to get carried away (excuse the pun) and make something that could cause unintentional injury.
Why would you?
By far the best reason is for the fun and bonding experience of making your own toy together, whatever that might be. Although this sort of thing can be a fun and romantic experience, it is very much another level of fun to put on some music, get in the mood with a glass of wine or two and make something together.
You could even finish it off with a fun little ceremony where you both hold it at the same time while you cut the ribbon or whatever you choose to do.
What to make?
If you’re new to this sort of thing I’d suggest making a paddle; it doesn’t require special tools or materials and can be done in an evening.
If you are comfortable working with leather (which is more difficult than you might think), then maybe try making a collar or set of cuffs. If not, just make them out of fabric or whatever else will feel good against your skin.
Be careful!
I know I’ve already said this but please be careful! A toy that isn’t made properly could easily cause injury that neither of you wants. That’s why when we sell things like paddles we always round off the corners and sand everything smooth. It’s very easy to leave sharp bits which will cut into your skin when things get lively!
