Overview
There are loads of ways to get sex toys in South Africa - most people just go online and buy something – but there’s a better way. If you’re near Johannesburg, you should visit the Secrets Shop in Linden. I’ve been to quite a few stores and this is definitely my favourite so far!
Why it’s better to walk into a shop
Whether you're buying for yourself or as a gift, it can be overwhelming. Even if you have an idea of what you want, once you start looking at options you’ll probably realise that there are so many more choices than you expected.
I’ve been doing this for years and still find it difficult to choose the best product. No matter which one I look at, there’s always another similar one that looks a bit different. Sometimes the differences are obvious but often they’re not.
Sometimes it's just about the general shape or size, but sometimes it's about the material, how it works or some other feature.
If you're buying for yourself then you probably know what sort of thing you like, so that makes it easier, but if it's a gift then how on earth are you supposed to know what to choose? I mean really...
How does going to a shop help?
The most important benefit is that there's someone there who knows all about these things and can help answer your questions and point out the differences between each product. In most cases that's all you need.
Of course being able to see them up close also helps - even if they're in boxes (which they usually are) they'll often have an open one that you can look at (and maybe even touch). This might sound weird but you'll understand when you're there!
Isn't it embarrassing?
This is obviously something that worries most people - just walking into a place like this is enough to make most people feel anxious.
I totally understand this because I felt the same way before I went into my first one. That was more than ten years ago and now I've been into almost every one in Johannesburg. Now it feels like going into any other shop (except it's more fun)!
The thing that made me feel comfortable was when I realised that everyone else in there is also feeling nervous, except for the people working there who are used to it and expect everyone to be awkward.
The staff are very helpful
I think what makes Secrets Shop special (apart from their big range of products) is the staff. Because they've done this so many times they know exactly what you're worried about and they can easily help to make you feel comfortable.
If you'd prefer to look around alone they'll leave you alone - if you'd like them to explain stuff or demonstrate anything they'll do that too.
They just seem much more relaxed than staff at other shops I've visited - maybe that's because they're not part of some big chain with rules about how staff should behave – they're just real people doing what comes naturally. That makes such a difference!
Conclusion
If you've never been into a sex shop before then I'd absolutely recommend Secrets Shop as your first time - I'm sure you'll be glad you did it! If you've already been somewhere then you'll see how this one is different.
