Overview
The best way to show your love for your boyfriend is to do something that makes him feel special, and to do that you need to know what sort of person he is. Yes, this is obvious, but what I mean is that the present you buy needs to be about him, not just about you and what you want.
For example if he’s a classy type who likes high-end things then get him a gift that looks expensive (even if it isn’t), or something that is genuinely expensive if you can afford it. Or maybe he likes simple pleasures like eating chocolate and watching Netflix in which case get him a box of chocolates and a fluffy blanket.
Whether he’s the sort that would like an experience or a physical object, I’d say the most important thing to think about is making it personal. Put some effort into finding out what he’d really like and he’ll probably appreciate it. If you just buy something generic then it will have little meaning for him.
What if I don’t know what he likes?
If you’ve just met then it’s understandable if you don’t know much about his preferences, but even so, try to find out. Even if it means asking someone who knows him well. If this isn’t possible then I’d say just do your best and make sure whatever you get doesn’t look like something generic from Amazon.
You could also be honest with him and tell him that you don’t know what to get, in which case maybe suggest going shopping together so you can learn what sort of things he likes.
